This is reportedly a personal project of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and once complete will allow a user that only has WhatsApp to contact another user who only uses Facebook or Instagram. This is not currently possible as these platforms are not built upon the same technical foundation, and so large portions of their code will need to be rewritten to accommodate this change. This report comes from the  New York Times which goes on to suggest that work on the project has already started and is rumoured to be completed at the end of 2019. Facebook is planning to merge all these services together to build a larger collective user-base to rival that of Apple’s iMessage or Google’s messaging services. However, there may be some who are nervous about such a move considering Facebook’s recent reputation for poor data handling, all starting with the Cambridge Analytica scandal last year.
